The science first. Your smartphone carries more germs than a toilet seat, and your electronic devices and their accessories are is a playground for germs. Here’s how you can clean and sanitise them.
Smartphone and tablet
Apple recently updated guidelines for cleaning their devices, the summary of which is “Using a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, you may gently wipe the hard, nonporous surfaces of your Apple product, such as the display, keyboard, or other exterior surfaces. Don’t use bleach. Avoid getting moisture in any opening, and don’t submerge your Apple product in any cleaning agents. Don’t use on fabric or leather surfaces.”
These guidelines are also applicable to smartphones and tablets by other brands.
Wash protective covers and cases with soap and water if they’re made from plastic or non-corrosive materials, and a soft cloth dampened with plain water if they’re leather-based.
Laptop and desktop computer
Disinfect keyboard, monitor and other surfaces, except the screen, with a microfiber cleaning cloth sprayed with soap water or sanitiser. Clean computer screens with a microfiber cloth sprayed with water, computer cleaner or eyeglass cleaner.
TV and remote
Your TV screen could be sensitive to harsh chemicals like glass and household cleaning sprays. Instead, clean the TV screen with a slightly damp microfiber cloth.
For remote controls and set-top-box, use a microfiber cloth sprayed with water. Use sanitiser if you notice a heavy build-up of grime on remotes.
Smart devices and gaming devices
Bluetooth speakers, game consoles and game controllers can be cleaned with microfiber cloths dampened with water. For devices with screens, dampen the cloth with a computer cleaning spray. Clean grooves and corners with cotton swabs dipped water, and sanitise them with swabs dipped in sanitiser or soap water.
Headphones and earphones
Detach and clean removable tips of earphones with soap water, rinse, dry and reattach. Clean exteriors of headphones with a damp cloth, and clean ear pads with cotton swabs dipped in sanitiser.
We know you care for your gadgets and devices. Now make sure they’re safe for use.
