Make a classic street food at home

Around the world some of the best and tastiest authentic food is cooked right on the street but that doesn’t mean you can’t try it yourself at home!

Here are three of our delicious favorites which you can whip up at home.

Cuban Sandwich

Cuban Sandwich

A quick and tasty sandwich, perfect for lunch. The ingredients listed below are enough for 1 sandwich. It should take roughly 10 minutes to make.

What you’ll need:

  • A glove of garlic, minced
  • Olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of low fat mayonnaise
  • 2 slices of artisan bread
  • 2 thick slices of deli smoked turkey
  • 2 slices of deli ham
  • 2 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 4 dill pickle slices
  • A pinch of spinach

Steps:

  1. Cook the garlic in a small frying pan with the olive oil until tender. Let it cool.
  2. Stir the garlic into the mayonnaise, then spread over the slices of bread. Layer the bread with the turkey, ham, cheese, pickles and spinach.
  3. Close the sandwich and cook on a panini maker or indoor grill until the cheese has melted. Roughly 2-3 minutes.

Fish Tacos

Fish Tacos

A fresh light alternative to beef or chicken tacos. Great for lunch or dinner or even just as a snack. The ingredients listed below are enough for 4 tacos. It should take roughly 30 minutes to make.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 tablespoon of lime juice
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.5 kilograms of cod fillets, cut into strips
  • 2 teaspoons of low fat milk
  • 1 teaspoon of water
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon-pepper seasoning
  • 8 tablespoons of low fat mayonnaise
  • 45 grams of bread crumbs
  • 4 corn tortillas, heated

Steps:

  1. In a small bowl or dish, mix the mayonnaise, milk and lime juice for the sauce. Refrigerate until you are ready to serve
  2. In a bowl, whisk the egg and water together. In another bowl mix the bread crumbs with the lemon pepper. Then dip the fish strips in the egg mixture and then the bread crumbs. Make sure you get an even coat on both sides.
  3. Heat a large non-stick pan or skillet over medium heat. Add the fish and cook for 4 minutes on each side. When the fish is golden brown its time to serve.
  4. Serve in the tortillas with toppings of your choice and the sauce you made earlier. We recommend some chopped tomatoes, a sprinkle of cheese and a pinch of cilantro.

Churros

Churros

A tasty fried dough treat, coated in cinnamon and sugar, best paired with a chocolate dip. The ingredients listed below are enough for a dozen churros and should take roughly 30 minutes to make.

What you’ll need:

  • 65 grams water
  • 65 grams milk
  • 65 grams sugar
  • 2 grams salt
  • 1 tablespoon of canola oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • 2 grams of ground cinnamon
  • 130 grams all-purpose flour

Steps:

  1. In a large saucepan, mix the water, milk, salt and oil. Then bring it to the boil. Add the flour and stir until a smooth ball of dough forms. Transfer from the pan to a bowl and let rest for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix thoroughly for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Prepare a baking tray with some baking paper. Place the mixture into a pastry bag and pipe out the dough into strips roughly 3-4 inches long.
  4. Bake in the oven at 180°C / 350°F for 10 minutes. Then broil / grill them until golden brown. Combine the sugar and cinnamon and roll the churros in the mix before serving.
